The best thing you can do for your body is complete the journey to your ideal weight. Obesity affects your financial health as well as your physical health. During the holidays, money is always stretched, but you can feel good knowing that an investment in your health will pay off in dividends. Lose weight, save money!
A report done in 2010 at George Washington University shows that healthcare costs related to obesity are now estimated at $147 billion annually, representing nearly 10% of all U.S. medical expenses. By 2030, these healthcare costs could account for up to 16 to 18 percent of total U.S. healthcare costs. You are doing your part to help keep insurance premiums and visits to the doctor down and your overall health up.
When you look at the statistics, it’s amazing what attaining a healthy weight will do for you. There are obvious health benefits, such as a decreased risk of chronic diseases, heart problems and diabetes, but there are unbelievable fringe benefits. A study by Ohio State University researcher, Jay Zagorsky, found that every one-unit increase in a young person’s BMI (from 30 to 31, for example) was associated with an 8 percent reduction in net worth. So, lowering your weight will not only bulk up your wallet from saving money at the doctor’s office, but your overall net worth could increase too.
Clearly it costs a lot of money to be overweight, and being a healthy weight will save you money. But these statistics don’t take into account the emotional toll obesity takes. For many people the quality of life decreases as the weight scale moves up. An article entitled, Assessment of Quality of Life in Obese Individuals by Thomas A. Wadden and Suzanne Phelanstates states, “current findings indicate that a substantial portion of obese individuals in the general population experience undesired physical or social consequences of their weight that diminish their quality of life in one or more areas.” And that these complications, “are likely to detract from the individual’s optimal enjoyment of work and leisure activities.”
